Adopted in such countries as Ira, Egypt,Mexico, etc. starting from England, where oil and natural gas were produced, but not coke.

Dueker of Germany started operation of 12t/h cokeless cupola with natural gas as its fuel.

Okamoto Co.,Ltd. Started operation of 5t/h cokeless cupola in Japan. |
Features of cokeless cupola
Advantages
- Less dust, easy measures against pollution,
SOx contained in the exhaust gas of cokeless cupola is low.
- No sulphur absorption, because no coke is used which facilitates the
production of ductile iron with low level sulphur.
- Low melting cost.
Excellent melting energy efficiency.
Disadvantages
- Problems of fuel supply.
- Supply, material, cost, and consumption of ceramic ball.
- Control of water-cooled grate.
- Shortage in operation technique.
- Insufficient research work into metallurgical matter.
- Carburization is necessary.
- Large consumption of refractory material.
The above should be solved before the cokeless cupola is put to widespread use.

Problems concerning cokeless cupola
Cokeless cupola has the following problems against the advanced coke-fired cupola:
- Advancement in burner technology has not been found.
- Control of slag components is difficult.
- The amount of steel scrap charge is limited.
- Durability of refractory material is a week point, and the consumption is large.
At present, several sets of cokeless cupola are being operated all over the world.
In Japan, two of this type of cupola ware installed, but no one is operated now.
It should be clarified why the cokeless cupola having advantages with regard to environmental regulation, economy, and energy saving has not obtained the position of up-to-date furnace.
